Who Will Win BattleBots Season 2?

Who Will Win BattleBots Season 2?

In 2015, ABC rebooted BattleBots, bringing robot death battles back to television. Now in its second season, the competition is growing fierce, as the championship bracket size has increased from 16 to 32. In order to win, bots will have to win 5 fights in a row, meaning only the best of the best will come out on top. Here are my picks for the Battlebots most likely to take home the trophy:

Lock-Jaw

Odds: 2% Stats: Aggression-80 | Control-97 | Weapons-72 | Defense-77 Lock-Jaw has had a rough start this season, losing its first bought against a newcomer. But, it is back through the wildcard, and ready for more action. Despite the early upset, Lock-Jaw has a lot going for it. Driver Donald Hutson has two championships under his belt driving his old bot, Diesector. Lockjaw also has a new tool this season, adding on a set of springs to make it a dual launcher and grappler. However, it lost its first battle due to malfunction early on in the fight, and those exposed tires look easy for a horizontal spinner to rip right through.

Warrior Clan

Odds: 5% Stats (season 1): Aggression-82 | Control-70  | Weapons-83 | Defense-72 Warrior clan won two fights last season, but lost out to Ghost Raptor due to mechanical failure. However, improvements this season will hopefully see it making a bigger impact. It is extremely low to the ground, allowing it to be a very effective lifter and able to avoid a variety of weapons. However, its small size makes the main bot easy to bat around the arena and it lacks the power to win fights by KO. As for the drone, the flying doohickeys have been shown to be highly ineffective so far this season due to difficultly maneuvering in battle.

Ghost Raptor

Odds: 5% Stats: Aggression-77  Control-59  Weapons-48 Defense:-87 Last season, Ghost Raptor was a huge comeback story. When the bar spinner snapped in half with no replacement, driver Chuck Pitzer used this to his advantage to modify the bot each round in order to better match his opponents. The front wedge was especially helpful. Hopefully this season though, we will actually see that horizontal spinner do some more damage. However, this will be the second season in a row that Ghost Raptor has relied on a wild card.

Brutus

Odds: 8% Stats: Aggression-70 | Control-68 | Weapons-80 | Defense-68 Brutus is a newcomer, and I was surprised to find myself ranking it within the top ten. It is the first bot to be listed as a shooter, though we were informed by Kenny Florian that those are just special effects bullets, more for show and intimidation than anything. However, it is the  rest of the bot's design that makes it a fierce opponent. The front wedges leading up to a vertical bar spinner design seems to be both popular and effective this tournament, as we see  Bite Force and Witch Doctor rocking similar looks. However, we have yet to see the driving skills of team captain Adam Bercu, and he did come off of last season with Team MIT, which entered one of the weakest bots of last season, Overhaul.

Bronco

Odds: 8% Stats: Aggression-91 | Control-89 | Weapons-91 | Defense-83 I have to admit, Bronco is my favorite bot. It is hard to match the spectacle of watching Bronco launch other competitors sky-high. Bronco is a showman, but backs it up with amazing control and many good match ups. It also arguably has the most well-balanced stats of any of the competitors. But, Bronco does have poor defenses against horizontal spinners, shown when it lost to Tombstone last season due to poor driving, and inability to get the flipper under Tombstone's body. Additionally, if it gets knocked on its back, it becomes a sitting duck.

Minotaur

Odds: 10% Stats: Aggression-96 | Control-82 | Weapons-99 | Defense-87 Minotaur may be new to Battlebots, but it has been around the block, boasting two championships in the Robogames. Additionally, it has the highest stats of any competitor, boasting a massive 364 stat total! For comparison, reigning champ Bite Force is at a mere 279.  On paper, Minotaur looks amazing, and in the arena we've seen some of the best driving and adaptive strategy of any competitor. While on paper, Minotaur seems like  a shoe in for victory, it does have its share of drawbacks. Its small stature and poor reach makes it easy to knock around, and that drum spinner needs to get in close to deal any kind of damage.

Son of Whyiachi

Odds: 10% Stats: Aggression-76 | Control-73 | Weapons-100 | Defense-63 Nothing is more intimidating than scoring a 100 in the weapons category. Son of Whyiachi, or SOW, is a former champion, coming out of retirement for a chance at the title. SOW has an extremely powerful spinner, reaching speeds of 200mph, and the bot is heavy enough and low enough to the ground to not get sent airborne during impact like full-body spinner Captain Shredderator is known for doing. Moreover, SOW blades completely covers it's frame, allowing for streamlined defenses. But what could take this beast down? Should that three arm rotor blade get caught or disabled, SOW has little else to offer. Going against strong wedges could easily put SOW in its place.

Tombstone

Odds: 12% Stats: Aggression-83 | Control-67 | Weapons-100 | Defense-32 If you thought SOW had the most powerful weapon, guess again. It is tied with Tombstone, a bot notorious last season for absolutely obliterating opponents. Tombstone is a past Battlebots champion, and boasts a record of 13 wins to 3 losses. The trick is that horizontal bar spinner, which has excellent power, great reach, and protects the body of the bot from getting damaged. The bot seamed unstoppable last season, but was taken down in the championship fight against Bite Force, which used a strong defensive wedge and great driving to put an end to Tombstone. Tombstone's poor control and terrible defense leave it wide open for any driver with a strategy to get around that devastating weapon.

Bite Force

Odds: 15% Stats: Aggression-60 | Control-81 | Weapons-67 | Defense-71 Coming in as my second most likely to win is the reigning champ, Bite Force. Bite Force won last season due to the superior driving skills of Paul Ventimiglia, and, frankly, some lucky match ups. Going back to last season, Bite Force almost lost to the similarly designed Overhaul, a bot a previously mentioned as having some of the worst stats around. That battle was even more contentious than Bite Force against Tombstone in the championship. However, Bite Force has changed a lot this season, converting from a lifter and grappler into a vertical bar spinner. So, this version is still somewhat untested. Hopefully Paul Ventimiglia's talent with shine through, and make this somewhat run-of-the-mill bot into another champion.

Witch Doctor and Shaman

Odds: 20% Stats: Aggression-89 | Control-80 | Weapons-89 | Defense-83 My pick for the bot that will take it home is none other than Witch Doctor. Last season, Witch Doctor didn't perform all that well, losing to Tombstone early on when it was flipped and was unable to right itself. However, I think Witch Doctor has all the components to make a winner. That devious wedge on the front makes for an excellent trump card against most weapons, and low enough to the ground to avoid being flipped. Offensively, the disc spinner up front has proved to be a powerful weapon for eating through other bots, and the mini-bot Shaman has that crowd-pleasing flamethrower. While Witch Doctor may not have the flashiest weapon or have the best track record, it has one of the most functional and versatile designs and as long as it can keep in front of its opponents, I think it is sure to be this year's winner.
