Ranking MCU Franchises by Bankability

Ranking MCU Franchises by Bankability

In creating the first cinematic universe, Marvel has found a way to tie together multiple movie franchises into a synonymous collection that rakes in billions every year. However, the whole is definitely greater than the sum of it's parts. Not every Marvel franchise was created equal, and some certainly carry the others.

#7 The Incredible Hulk

$126 million

One of the MCU's first outings way back in 2008, The Incredible Hulk failed to make a strong impression, especially coming out in the shadow of the first Iron Man. The movie only grossed $263 million worldwide, while Captain America: Civil War made $180 in it's opening weekend alone! We're sure not going to see another Hulk standalone film for a long time.

#6 Ant-Man

$388 million

Jumping to one of the newest franchise launches, Ant-Man's first outing made a commendable $518 million, outgrossing the first Captain America and Thor movies. However, Ant-Man is still a budding franchise built on the shoulders of giants. With only one movie under it's belt, there is still some time before we know whether this franchise can stand on it's own two feet, or, should I say, it's own six appendages. (By the way, doesn't it look like they definitely copied this poster from Captain America: The First Avenger? Check it out, below.)

#5 Thor

$782 million

The Thor franchise is a steady mainstay for Marvel, but the character has been pushed off into secondary status next to Iron Man and Cap. While in total, the first two Thor movies have grossed just slightly more than Captain America, $1.093 million to $1.085 million, his growth in popularity hasn't been as drastic. And, in being absent for Civil War and having a 4-year gap between his second and third movie, it is obvious Marvel realizes Thor isn't their biggest star.

#4 Captain America

$772+ million

Captain America's trilogy has finally come to a close, and ended as one that exponentially improved with each movie outing both in quality and viewership. Civil War at the time of writing this is lining up to be one of the highest grossing Marvel Films yet. However, considering it was filmed and marketed as Avenger 2.5, it is hard to say that the captain is the one who filled the seats. Still, Captain America has gained a hefty following on his own and seems will be leading the Avengers for the years to come.

#3 Guardians of the Galaxy

$773 Million

Marvel's biggest gamble so far paid off, and paid off big. Making $770 million in the box office, audiences are definitely hooked on the feeling. While only one movie has come out, it is hard to imagine the Guardians of the Galaxy won't continue to break the box office when they return. With Chris Pratt's rising star power and the lovable Groot make for a franchise's that's popularity is only going to keep growing.

#2 Iron Man

$1.86 billion

Iron Man started it all, single-handedly launched Marvel back into the movie business. While critically these films have received mixed reviews, Robert Downey Jr.'s performance as Tony Stark is the center of charisma that holds the cinematic universe together. Overall, the Iron Man trilogy has taken in $1.86 million, only second to one franchise...

#1 The Avengers

$2.44 billion

These days, Avengers movies are guaranteed to rake in a billion dollars easily, and it isn't hard to see why. If you are a fan of all, or even just one of the Marvel superheroes, these are the movies for you. Combining all the other franchises into one, the Avengers are the greatest superhero team to ever hit the big screen (Sorry X-Men and Fant4stic) and have carried the weight in making the MCU the most profitable movie franchise of all time.

What do you think about upcoming franchises? Will Dr. Strange, Spider-man, or Black Panther gives these films a run for their money at the box office?
